Conservation ecologist Dr. Daan Vreugdenhil, a member of the United Nations team that selected Ecuador’s first 39 protected areas, was the visionary who proposed the creation of the Cuyabeno Wildlife Reserve and the Yasuni National Park. Later, he pioneered ecotourism in Cuyabeno by building the very first lodge. Ofcourse, he chose the best spot, a small island near the shore of Lake Cuyabeno itself.

For the best wildlife observation, birdwatching, swimming and watching Cuyabeno’s legendary sunsets, there’s no better place to be than the lake. Most lodges are downstream from the lake requiring a half-hour boat ride each way to get there.

Lodges along the river lack a spectacular lake view while our Cuyabeno Lodge offers a front-row seat to the reserve’s most breathtaking view of the entire reserve, right from our viewing deck. Here the magic truly happens, as monkeys gather at your doorstep, sunsets paint the water in gold and crimson, and the rainforest surrounds you in its timeless rhythm.
